Brighton Beach in Black and white…
November 12, 2009
Here are some black and white converted photos from a Brighton Beach Set taken last Winter.

Just testing out a workflow to get the image converted.

Had a chance to slip out for a couple of hours to Brighton Beach yesterday to check out the Bath Box and also test out our new Cokin Z-Pro tools. It was really a beautiful afternoon and a really sandy+windy too. Been here in Melbourne for awhile and this is the first time checking out the Bath Boxes. And I can say its really cool and colorful place. I had problems using the Cokin-P with the 16-35mm SAL (Sony AF Lens) at the 16mm focal length in our Phillip Island Nobbies shoot. The wide end was getting bad vignetting with the Cokn-P filters even on the single slot wide-angle holder. Well, the Cokin Z-Pro is surely an improvement to the Cokin P.
I will write a short review for this setup in the weeks to come.

Fortunately the weather was great and good sun cover in a mix of diffused and direct sunlight. As you can see the cloud breakages are really alternating like a fan blade. The wind was really carrying the fine sand off the ground and hitting on my face and the camera. Had to wash the filter under running water to remove the sand!!

Hang around for the review of the Z-Pro Cokin Filter system. Till then G’Day.

Sulhan
Location scout to Phillip Island, Victoria
July 8, 2009
We went out on an overnight location scout trip to Phillip Island. Fortunately this coincides with the school holidays and it doubled up as a family short vacation too. After hearing so much about the island form others, the visit was truely a must-go for those of you who love nature – flora and fauna. The best in the list of the trip was the Phillip Island Penguin Parade. Its a really great idea to have a tourist spot right where the penguin habitat is. Its a great place for kids and parents alike to learn about the little penguins and how they come back form to cold sea to their burrow at sunset. All to avoid being detected by the larger birds of prey – sea gulls alike. During the period where the penguins were returning in groups of 10 to 20 up the beach as they fought their way up away form the pull-back of the returning waves, we could see a group of sea gulls trying to attack the penguins that may be straddling in the water alone. Well, no photography was allowed here – not even “no-flash” photography and video. Only to be captured with our eyes and kept up there in our memories.

We stayed in a cabin for the night – really cold and wet winter night!!!
The next day, we explored western tip region at The Nobbies. It was a nice scenic drive with long straight roads. Like thoe you see in the cartoons with nice hills.

There we found some good photography spots. There were also some good nature shoot opportunities with the birds – penguins included, and also seals on shore (too bad during our visit there – they were out at sea). The region makes a good landscape photography location with several natural rocks and geographical landforms that worth photographing.

The wind form the south was really strong and the cold wind will endlessly beat against your windbreaker and you could hear the loud flapping sound of the fabrics against the wind. There were some penguins taking shelter below the boardwalk.

The late morning was spent at the Koala Sanctuary where one could see the surviving Koalas on Phillip Island taken care and protected in this protected barricaded area. The smell of the Eucalyptus tree fills the air around us as we walked through the tree-level boardwalk. In the crners, we could see cute cuddly koalas perched on the branches ends feeding on specially picked red spine leafy eucalyptus branches .

It was a great sight looking at these little bears eating and sleeping away throughout the day. We headed back to Melbourne in the afternoon where we took a short detour to a cow milking facility called Caldermeade Farm. It was an eye opener to see cows being called back from their grazing fields, back for their milking at 3:30pm sharp everyday!! Here are some of the shots form the visit.

A really great short trip and found some god spots and locations. Looking forward for the next road trip…….
